Why Chelsea Are Stilll Paying Graham Potter Ksh33m Per Week Despite Sacking Him In April 2023

Chelsea are still paying former coach Graham Potter £200,000 (Ksh33.1 million)-a-week despite sacking him over one year ago.

Potter was dismissed by the Blues in April 2023 following a spate of poor results, having just joined the club in September 2022, as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement.

The Premier League club had paid his former side Brighton and Hove Albion £21 million (Ksh3.48 billion) in compensation to lure him and his backroom staff from the Amex Stadium to Stamford Bridge.

Potter signed a five-year contract that would have kept him at Chelsea until 2027 and when he was dismissed a few months later, the two parties agreed to an 18-month compensation, which means the club will pay him £200,000 (Ksh33.1 million)-a-week until October 2024.

That can, however, stop if Potter gets another job in between and the Blues will be hoping that he lands the England manager’s position following recent links.

Potter is among names that have been floated around as possible replacements for Gareth Southgate, who quit in the wake of England’s disappointing Euro 2024 loss to Spain, and if that happens, Chelsea could save over £1 million (Ksh165 million) that can help them with compliance of Premier League’s sustainability regulations.

The 49-year-old coach has received a number of offers to return to the dugout but turned them down, with Leicester City and Ajax Amsterdam among teams who he has said no to, and it remains to be seen how he would react to England’s approach if it was made.
