Various sources within SuperSport TV have informed iDiski Times that the broadcasting company has made a U-turn and they have secured the rights to show the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

SuperSport TV had failed to win the rights to show the tournament that will be hosted in Ivory Coast in the coming days.

That was followed by huge criticism around the country and in the West of Africa such as Ghana and Nigeria, where SuperSport TV has a footprint, with people threatening to cancel their subscriptions.

“Some big news coming out of SuperSport TV to show the AFCON matches,” a source told iDiski Times.

“The announcement is going to be made this morning.”

Another source said: “I hear the announcement will be done today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday). Now it’s solid. There was a meeting this morning (on Wednesday). But it appears everything is done.”

Last week DSTV CEO Marc Jury said SuperSport TV cannot be ruled out in broadcasting the Africa Cup of Nations finals that are starting from 13 January until 11 February, saying “we still have time to pass”, when he told this publication.

This after a leaked letter that was widely shared on social media last week on Wednesday from the DSTV’s sister company – MultiChoice that it will not show the Africa Cup of Nations, the biggest tournament on the African continent, due to rights not being secured, with the reaction of social media going off the roof to criticize the company.

This is despite the Confederation of African Football (“CAF”) having concluded a historic Media Rights Agreement with Pan-African broadcaster New World TV (from Togo) for CAF’s Free to Air and Pay-Tv English and Local Languages Media Rights for Sub-Saharan territories for CAF Competitions and Events from 2023-2025,” the statement said then.

There was an expectation that SuperSport would follow the Togolese broadcaster, but, with few days before the tournament kick-offs in the West African country, SuperSport appeared to have changed its stance to have secured the rights, with Jury adding: “Listen, you never know. There is still time to pass that.”

If SuperSport indeed has secured, the right this late, plenty of work will have to be done, such as approaching legends to be part of the broadcasting to analyze these games as they have done in the past.
