Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has declared that he will sponsor 50 young girls to cheer the Junior Starlets team during the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup to be held in the Dominican Republic in October.

In a statement on Monday, June 17, the ex-county boss noted that the 50 girls were going to cheer the team in its historic debut in the competition.

According to Sonko, he will sponsor men when the national football team, Harambee Stars, qualifies for the World Cup.

"Here are the girls who made history yesterday by qualifying for the Under 17 FIFA World cup to be held in the Dominican Republic in October. I'm going to sponsor 50 girls to go cheer our heroines. Men you will wait, the day Harambee Stars will qualify for the World Cup I'll do the same," Sonko remarked.

Junior Starlets made history on Sunday after they downed Burundi 2-0 at a fully-packed Ulinzi Complex in Nairobi.

The team qualified with an aggregate win of 5-0 after an earlier 3-0 victory in Bujumbura in the first leg of the qualifiers.

Junior Starlets now join Nigeria and Zambia as the only African teams that have already qualified for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup competition.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba awarded the team with Sh10 million, expressing his gratitude for their stellar performance on Sunday.

"It is a pleasure to cheer and support you. An honour to reward you with Kshs 10 million in recognition of your historic achievement of getting to the very summit. The first Kenyan team ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup at any level," Namwamba said.
