Manchester United have agreed to sell Mason Greenwood to Ligue 1 side Marseille, a report has claimed.

The Red Devils decided against their initial plans to reintegrate Greenwood into their first-team setup last year and he spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe.

The forward was suspended by United back in January 2022 after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. Greater Manchester Police confirmed the existence of "social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence" and he was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

But these charges were then dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service, citing

"a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction."

After Greenwood's loan at Getafe ended, he was linked with moves to various European clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Lazio.

But David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that French outfit Marseille have agreed a £26.7m deal with United to sign Greenwood, with £23.3m to be paid up front and a further £3.4m to come in add-ons. The Premier League club have negotiated a significant sell-on clause into the deal, though Greenwood is still yet to agree personal terms over the move.

Greenwood returned to United's Carrington training complex earlier this week to discuss his future, with the club hierarchy informing them of their intentions to sell him. It has been claimed United did not plan on letting him train.

Marseille recently confirmed the appointment of former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager. They finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season.
