Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal should be in the conversation to sign Kylian Mbappe this summer, asking: “Why not?”
Mbappe has informed Paris St-Germain that he intends to leave the club at the end of this season, when his contract expires.
The 25-year-old is widely expected to join Real Madrid but Arteta believes Arsenal should be exploring any potential deal for a player of Mbappe’s quality.

Arsenal are known to be keen to strengthen their frontline ahead of next season, although the financial package required to sign Mbappe is expected to be extraordinarily large.
Asked if Arsenal should be in the conversation to sign Mbappe, Arteta said:
“Exactly. Why not? If we want to be the best team, we are going to need the best talent and the best players, that is for sure.”
Earlier in his press conference on Friday, Arteta had been asked if he would be interested in signing the France international, despite the interest from Madrid.
“When there is a player of that calibre we always have to be in the conversation,” said Arteta. “But as you said, it looks in a different way.”
Asked later to clarify whether he was indeed in the “conversation” for Mbappe, Arteta replied:
“I am not! Maybe Edu [Arsenal’s sporting director] and the owners are, but I am not in those conversations until the last stage.”
It was put to Arteta that Arsenal have become one of the most attractive projects in Europe for talented players.
“The club we are, I don’t think that has ever been an issue,” said Arteta. “Everybody wants to play for Arsenal. At least the players we have held discussions with, they always have that smile on their face, the moment you open the door and start to have that discussion. That is because of our history and everything we have done in the past.”
Since joining PSG, Mbappe has scored 243 goals in 290 games for the French giants, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading talents.
