Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says the club still have players in the squad he disliked when he was in charge.

The Portuguese manager joined United in the summer of 2016 and led the club in 144 games in all competitions before losing his job in 2018 after a poor run of form, having won the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League at Old Trafford.

Now without a role after leaving Roma following his last stint in the Premier League with Tottenham, Mourinho has opened up on his relationship with former United chief executive Ed Woodward and hinted he would make changes to the current squad.

In an interview The Telegraph, he said:

"I didn't have that level of trust [that Erik ten Hag does]. So I left sad, because I felt I was in the beginning of the process.

"In some moments, I felt as if they trusted me and believed in my experience things could be different. There are still a couple of players there I didn't want five or six years ago. I think they represent a little bit of what I consider to be not the best professional profile to a club of a certain dimension.

"But I did my job there. Time always tells the truth. I would love Manchester United to succeed."

Mourinho bought high-profile stars like Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku during his time in charge at Man Utd, while current first-teamers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were regular features in his team at Old Trafford.

The ex-Chelsea boss also had a frosty relationship with left-back Luke Shaw, who was publicly called out by his manager over his struggles for consistency and fitness.
