Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno is set to depart Zesco United of Zambia for South Africa’s Richards Bay FC, according to reports in South Africa.

Otieno, who is out of contract at Zesco is one of the players that Gor Mahia were looking at to bolster their goalkeeping department. The former Posta Rangers and AFC Leopards man is now poised for a move down south after agreeing to a deal with the Premier Soccer League side.

The seasoned custodian has been with Zesco for the last four years, having joined the club in 2020 and establishing himself as the first choice.

The Harambee Stars goalkeeper will directly replace Jackson Mabokgwane, who recently parted ways with the PSL outfit. Under the leadership of head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi, the club has already resumed training in preparation for next season’s campaign, which will start in early August.

Richards Bay retained their top-flight status in South Africa through the playoffs, where they had to battle against AmaTuks and Baroka FC to maintain their Premiership status after a turbulent season.

The club has made five signings so far: Fezile Gcaba and Sbani Khumalo from the KZN ABC Motsepe League side Mkhumbane Classic FC, and they have also acquired Siyethemba Sithebe, Tlakusani Mthethwa, and Keegan Allan on free transfers after their departures from their respective clubs.

Richards Bay Football Club is based in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The club was formed when Thanda Royal Zulu F.C. owner Pierre Delvaux sold the club's league status to AmaZulu F.C.

AmaZulu had finished fifth in the 2016–17 National First Division, while Thanda Royal Zulu had finished first, securing automatic promotion. AmaZulu subsequently purchased the place from Thanda Royal Zulu, taking their position in the 2017–18 South African Premier Division.

Otieno may not be the only Kenyan goalkeeper heading to South Africa, as Tusker’s Brian Bwire is also on the verge of joining Polokwane City FC.
