After a thrilling ending at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea managed to defeat Brighton 3-2 despite playing the whole second half with 10 men.
When stoppage time came at the end of the first half, Conor Gallagher received a second yellow card for fouling Billy Gilmour. With headers from Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill, Mauricio Pochettino's team was already two goals ahead.
Facundo Buonanotte had put Brighton back in the game with a swinging strike inside the post just moments before Gallagher was sent out, and the stage appeared to be set for a comeback by the visitors.
Rather, Chelsea made a comeback, as Fernandez scored from the penalty spot halfway through the second half following a foul on the great Mykhailo Mudryk.
At the beginning of a protracted extra time session, Chelsea's defence survived a penalty scare following what was essentially the game's last action when Joao Pedro came off the bench to head a goal back.
